What it means
An evidence room is a place, a set of rules and a record. Software for it has to know the places (vaults, shelves, lockers, the drying room), the rules (who may check what out, what needs a second signature, how long each item type is kept) and the record (every move, by whom, when).
What to look for
The questions to ask: Can an officer book an item from the scene, before it reaches the room? Does every item get a tag the scanner reads? Is the chain of custody one unbroken list, or three systems stitched together? Are holds, retention and disposition part of the item, with the approvals recorded?
How DEVI does it
In DEVI, the evidence room is set up with a guided walk-through: name the places, pick the rules, print the tags. An officer books an item from an iPhone at the scene; the technician receives it with a scan; every move writes a line in the custody record; disposition waits for the approvals the agency set.
